
The University Psychological Counseling Unit, in cooperation with the Scientific Affairs Division at the College of Education for Pure Sciences (Ibn Al-Haitham), organized an awareness and guidance seminar on the occasion of the International Day for the Prevention of Violent Extremism. The seminar was attended by a number of undergraduate students and was entitled: “University Students’ Awareness in Confronting Intellectual and Social Extremism.”
The seminar commenced with remarks by Prof. Dr. Laith Mohammed Ayyash, who emphasized the vital role of university institutions in promoting a culture of moderation and enhancing students’ intellectual awareness. He pointed out that confronting extremism begins with building individual awareness capable of distinguishing between sound and deviant ideas, while also reinforcing the values of dialogue and tolerance within the university environment.
The seminar further explored the concept of intellectual and social extremism, its underlying causes, and its negative repercussions on both individuals and society. It highlighted the important role played by universities, families, and media institutions in preventing extremism, with particular emphasis on developing critical thinking skills and strengthening national belonging among students.
In turn, lecturers Assist. Lecturer Reham Najm Shati and Assist. Lecturer Abeer Omar Akram addressed the role of awareness programs in promoting positive behavior among students, as well as methods of fostering a culture of acceptance, coexistence, and reducing negative ideological influences.
At the conclusion of the seminar, the speakers stressed the importance of continuing awareness activities that contribute to strengthening students intellectually and promoting the values of tolerance and peaceful coexistence.
