As part of its ongoing commitment to fostering a supportive academic environment and promoting students’ mental well-being, the Department of Computer Science at the College of Education for Pure Sciences (Ibn Al-Haitham) organized an awareness seminar entitled “Strategies for Overcoming Psychological Stress That May Lead to Suicidal Ideation.” The event was held in the activities of the University’s Psychological Counseling Unit and was attended by several
undergraduate students from the department.
The seminar was delivered by Professor Muntaha Mutashar Abdul Sahib and Professor Areej Khudhair Hassan, who presented a series of educational and counseling topics aimed at increasing students’ awareness of the psychological pressures they may encounter throughout their academic journey and equipping them with effective coping strategies.
The speakers highlighted the major causes and consequences of psychological stress, emphasizing its potential impact on students’ mental health and academic performance. They also introduced practical approaches for stress management, resilience building, and seeking professional psychological support when needed. Special attention was given to the importance of early intervention in reducing the risk of severe psychological distress that, in some cases, may contribute to suicidal ideation.
The seminar concluded with an interactive discussion session, during which students shared their concerns and received guidance and emotional support. The organizers reaffirmed the vital role of the Psychological Counseling Committee in providing continuous assistance and promoting a safe, inclusive, and supportive university environment that enhances students’ well-being and academic success.
