
The Department of Biology at the College of Education for Pure Sciences held the defense of a master’s thesis entitled “The Use of Chlorella vulgaris in the Bioremediation of Industrial Dyes,” presented by Siham Muhsin Juhail Mowzan under the supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Buthaina Abdul Aziz Hassan, in the presence of the examination committee, faculty members, and researchers.
The research investigated the efficiency of the microalga Chlorella vulgaris in removing industrial dyes, including Tartrazine, Lanacron, and Lanasyn, at different concentrations. It also examined the impact of dye pollution on biodiversity within the selected study sites. Furthermore, the study involved the isolation and identification of algal species, cultivation under suitable laboratory conditions, and the evaluation of the physical and chemical factors influencing algal growth and distribution, contributing to the development of environmentally friendly biological approaches for treating industrial pollutants.
The findings highlighted the significant potential of Chlorella vulgaris as an effective biological agent for industrial wastewater treatment, demonstrating its capability to reduce dye contamination while supporting sustainable environmental management and the protection of aquatic ecosystems.
The thesis recommended conducting broader studies on indigenous Iraqi algal species to identify strains with superior dye-degrading capabilities, adopting Chlorella vulgaris as a biological model for industrial wastewater treatment, and establishing algal cultivation systems within industrial facilities to enhance bioremediation practices. It also emphasized investigating the influence of environmental factors on dye removal efficiency and exploring synergistic interactions between algae, bacteria, and fungi to develop more efficient and sustainable biological treatment systems.
