The Rehabilitation and Employment Unit at the College of Education for Pure Sciences organized an awareness workshop on cyber extortion in cooperation with the National Security Service/University Security Directorate, in the presence of the Dean of the College, Prof. Dr. Firas Abdul-Hamid Abdul-Latif, and Associate Dean Prof. Dr. Rana Bahjat Ismail, with the participation of a number of faculty members, students, and college staff.
The workshop was moderated by the Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Assistant Professor Dr. Mohammed Kamal Nassif, while a number of officers from the National Security Service/University Security Directorate delivered specialized presentations addressing the risks of cyber extortion, preventive measures, and appropriate mechanisms for dealing with cases that individuals may encounter in the digital environment.
The workshop addressed four main themes. The first focused on the theoretical aspect, including the definition of cyber extortion, its different forms, causes, and major manifestations. The second addressed the technical dimension by explaining the methods and techniques that extortionists may employ to obtain personal information and data and exploit them for malicious purposes.
The third theme focused on the legal dimension, highlighting the appropriate procedures to be followed when individuals are exposed to cyber extortion, as well as reporting mechanisms and ways of communicating with the competent security authorities. This contributes to ensuring an appropriate response to such cases and reducing their potential consequences.
The fourth theme addressed the preventive dimension, providing practical guidance on protecting personal data and information, using electronic devices and social media platforms safely and responsibly, and enhancing awareness of secure digital practices.
The workshop also witnessed active engagement from the participants through discussions, questions, and interventions, which enriched the topics presented and contributed to a broader exchange of views concerning the challenges associated with cyber extortion and effective approaches to prevention and response.
The workshop forms part of the College’s efforts to promote digital and security awareness among its students and staff, raise awareness of cyber risks, and develop skills for the safe and responsible use of technology and modern communication platforms. It also reflects the College’s commitment to strengthening cooperation between academic institutions and specialized security authorities in support of the community and the development of a safe university environment.
The activity contributes to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:
SDG 4: Quality Education, by providing learning and awareness opportunities and developing the knowledge and skills required for safe and responsible engagement with the digital environment. This is particularly relevant to Target 4.4, concerning relevant technical and ICT skills, and Target 4.7, concerning the acquisition of knowledge and skills for sustainable development and responsible citizenship.
SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, through raising awareness of legal mechanisms for addressing cyber extortion and providing information on reporting procedures and communication with competent authorities. This supports broader objectives related to the rule of law, access to justice, and effective institutions.
The activity may also support SDG 5: Gender Equality, particularly by contributing to digital safety awareness and protection among groups that may face heightened exposure to online risks.
