The Women’s Affairs Unit at the College of Education for Pure Sciences (Ibn Al-Haitham) organized an awareness workshop entitled “The Impact of Your Online Activity and Its Future: The Digital Footprint.” The workshop was delivered by Assistant Professor Dr. Shahla Talib Abdul Wahab, a faculty member in the Department of Computer Science, as part of the College’s ongoing efforts to promote digital literacy among students and foster a culture of safe, responsible, and informed use of technology and social media.
The workshop explored the concept of the digital footprint and the ways in which it develops through individuals’ online activities and interactions. Particular emphasis was placed on its role in shaping personal, academic, and professional reputations, as well as its potential implications for educational opportunities, employment prospects, and individuals’ future participation in the digital environment.
The presentation also addressed the major risks associated with digital footprints, including privacy violations, identity theft, phishing attacks, and the misuse of personal data. Real-world cases were discussed to illustrate the potential consequences of unsafe internet practices and data breaches. Furthermore, the workshop examined emerging challenges associated with the use of artificial intelligence in identity impersonation and deepfake manipulation of images and voices, highlighting the growing need for digital awareness, vigilance, and critical evaluation of online content.
The practical component of the workshop focused on strategies for strengthening digital privacy and cybersecurity. These included managing privacy settings, securing online accounts, creating strong passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, and carefully considering the potential consequences of sharing personal information, photographs, and other content on digital platforms.
The workshop aimed to enhance students’ understanding of digital footprints and their impact on personal, academic, and professional life; develop their skills in protecting privacy and personal data; raise awareness of the risks associated with unsafe internet and social media use; and encourage the responsible use of technology and the creation of a positive and secure digital footprint.
This initiative forms part of the awareness-raising activities undertaken by the Women’s Affairs Unit to strengthen students’ digital competencies and enhance their ability to navigate contemporary technological challenges. It also contributes to fostering a safer, more informed, and more responsible educational environment.
The workshop supports several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly:
SDG 4: Quality Education — By promoting digital literacy, expanding students’ knowledge, and developing the skills required for informed and responsible engagement with technology.
SDG 5: Gender Equality — By supporting the awareness-raising efforts of the Women’s Affairs Unit and strengthening digital awareness and online safety among students.
SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions — By promoting safe and responsible digital practices and raising awareness of identity theft, privacy violations, and the misuse of personal data.
